JAY — A fire on the roof of a second-floor balcony early Thursday morning caused minimal damage to a three-story apartment house, Jay Fire/Rescue Chief Mike Booker said.
The fire at 9 Church St. at 4:48 a.m. Thursday was caused by a discarded cigarette, he said.
The cigarette started a fire in the shingled balcony roof. Members of Jay Fire and Rescue responded and quickly extinguished the fire.
No one was injured and residents were allowed to return to their apartments, he said.
The building is owned by Leigh Stevens of Livermore Falls and is insured, he said.
Booker estimated that $4,000 would be needed to repair the roof.
There are four apartments in the building. Each has smoke alarms and a fire alarm system, Stevens said.
