LIVERMORE FALLS — Each August since 2004, the Frantasia Festival of Out Music and Arts has brought together experimental artists from all over the world to perform in Livermore Falls.

Music, dance, poetry, and even some comedy have been part of the program in the past. This year’s festival, which is Aug. 18, 19, and 20 in the basement of Fitness Stylz in Livermore Falls, promises variety and some surprises for those willing to venture in and experience the event.

Years before the festival was held in Livermore Falls, founder Fran Szostek held an informal gathering of different artists at his Bryant Pond camp. There, the performers would showcase their talent and collaborate with one another late into the night.

While the venue is different and the festival has expanded, the spirit has remained the same. Szostek commented that the most rewarding aspect of being involved has been “Seeing others doing what they love to do – and getting to participate myself…in the witnessing, filming, and getting to know the performers.”

He added that it has also been satisfying to bring a vibrant, interesting culture to a small Maine town, and seeing young people get inspired by it. It has also been heartwarming for Szostek to see the collaborations and friendships formed between performers, and with himself and his wife, Kathleen.

The performances take place starting around 7 p.m. and last until midnight each evening. Donations are welcomed.

Several past performers expressed their gratitude to Szostek for creating an opportunity for them to display their talent in the scenic mountains of western Maine:

“A million thanks to you and Kathleen for creating something so vibrant, amazing, and open-ended in Livermore Falls.” — Killick

“I wanted to thank you for the wonderful time Brian and I had, especially for your hospitality and generosity. I enjoyed performing, hearing/seeing other people there and, of course, making a bunch of new friends.” — Vadim

“I was blown away by the festival…but what blew me away most was going to your home for the first time and seeing how accommodating you are to so many people.” — id m theftable

“I became aware of Frantasia in 2007. Work was various from performance art to music in several genres – all exciting and experimental.

“I was excited again in 2008. Again, it was the comfortable and creative environment I had experienced before. Young and old, fresh and seasoned shared knowledge in an equality that was refreshing and I feel quite unique to this festival.” — Louis Gesner

Next week, feature articles on several of this year’s Frantasia performers will be included in the Livermore Falls Advertiser. For more information on Frantasia, go to www.frantasiafestival.com, or check out Frantasia on Facebook.
