LEWISTON — Two men were hurt and two others arrested Friday night after a fight at the edge of Kennedy Park.

Witnesses reported that one man was stomped repeatedly in the head after a fight broke out at about 6:15 p.m. in the park near the corner of Bates and Pine streets.

Police and rescue crews swarmed on the scene as groups of bystanders clogged the corner of the park.

One man was arrested almost immediately after police arrived. A second man was arrested 10 minutes later after he was reportedly causing problems on a nearby porch.

Each was charged with disorderly conduct.

Both injured men were taken to Central Maine Medical Center by ambulance. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known, although they were not believed to be life-threatening.

According to witnesses, one of the men who was hurt had recently been discharged from a hospital for injuries sustained in an earlier fight.

The second man who was injured may have been trying to break up the brawl, witnesses said.

Several at the scene said that groups of people regularly gather on the sidewalk in front of an apartment house across the street from Kennedy Park and that there are frequent scraps there.

Police, both uniformed and undercover, were interviewing several witnesses at the scene as their investigation got underway.

“We’re getting several different versions of what took place out there,” said Lewiston police Lt. Michael McGonagle.

Police said the park was particularly crowded late in the day Friday after a thunderstorm brought sweltering temperatures down to a more comfortable level.
