LEWISTON — Kevin Ayers of Sumner was sentenced Friday by the Androscoggin District Attorney’s Office after being convicted of gross sexual assault in January.

A press release from interim Deputy Chief Adam Higgins stated that 49-year-old Ayers was originally sentenced on three counts of gross sexual assault and one count of unlawful sexual contact.

The Class A crimes occurred in Lewiston between Aug. 1 and Aug. 18 in 2013 and his victim was 10 at the time of the offenses.

Ayers was convicted after a two-day trial Jan. 19-20, according to Higgins. The prosecution was handled by the Androscoggin District Attorney’s Office and Assistant District Attorney Lisa Bogue.

His sentence, delivered Monday, is 25 years at the Department of Corrections with 10 years of supervised release.

This case was investigated by the Lewiston Police Department and Detective Ronald Dumont.
