POLAND — A mulch fire that spread to equipment and piles of dry goods and timber at Oldcastle Lawn and Garden on Sunday drew nearly 20 fire departments and burned for 19 hours, Fire Chief Mark Bosse said Tuesday.

He said the fire was caused by heat built up in the mulch pile. He estimated the damage was at least $200,000.

The fire was reported at 12:30 p.m. Sunday was finally out at 7:30 Monday morning.

High winds and dry conditions contributed to the spreading flames, Bosse said.

“The weather conditions have been perfect for fires. It’s been very dry,” he said. “We need some rain.”

He said crews used well over a million gallons of water to douse the blaze at 481 Spring Water Road.

“It was a long, drawn-out event,” he said. Firefighters were still cleaning up Tuesday, but there were no flames or hot spots.

No one was injured.
