LEWISTON — The city this week was awarded a federal grant expected to be used for police training, technology upgrades and the purchase of new law enforcement equipment.
U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Angus King, I-Maine, announced on Wednesday the $42,654 grant through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.
“Local law enforcement works diligently every day to help keep Maine communities safe, and federal support like this grant helps in that important mission,” Collins and King said in a joint statement. “By supporting efforts to train and equip local officers, this funding will invest in the safety and strength of the Lewiston community.”
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program provides funding to states and local governments in support of efforts to prevent and control crime. The JAG program is administered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, a component of the Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs.
