LEWISTON — The City Council on Tuesday discussed three topics at its workshop:
• A proposal for a John T. Gorman Foundation Grant, which would help disadvantaged families succeed and develop working skills.
This $150,000 grant would help an estimated 30 people in Lewiston.
• The ongoing proposal for the transfer of the canal system from Brookfield to the city.
This topic has been on and off the table for at least seven years, but this deal is looking a lot more promising than previous ones. If the transfer is finalized, the city will be able to make any aesthetic changes it wants, as long as it doesn’t affect the quality and amount of water in the canal.
• Councilors are nearing a completed and official Comprehensive Plan.
After three years of drafting and discussing the 200-plus-page plan, it is finally down to the stages of tweaking language and fixing grammar. The approved product would be the official plan for transportation, utilities, land use, recreation, and housing for the next 12 to 20 years.
All three topics will be on next week’s City Council meeting agenda.
