BRUNSWICK — The Theater Project will open its 45th season with a collection of productions that highlights five original plays by Maine playwrights.
“Nina” by Lynne Connor will open Sept. 22, with a professional ensemble. Lisa Mueller-Jones is director.
A journey into identity, loss, memory and the power of female friendship, the play focuses on the lives of two concentration camp survivors whose 50-year friendship is being challenged by the death of a daughter.
“Cauldron Bubble” will take the stage Oct. 28. The comedy is about a high school student who thinks he’s put the famous Macbeth curse on his school’s production of “The Scottish Play.”
“Cocktails and Travails” will open in February 2017, after December productions of “Holiday Tales” and “Wales and Tales.” In this production, nervous professor Greg Donaldson and his wife, Emily, are preparing a sensible, sophisticated evening, but after party crashers, hors d’oeuvres accidents and too much punch, things really go wrong.
“Mother’s Helper” will premiere March 2. This is the story of a headstrong 12-year-old girl named Natalie, who spends a summer on an isolated Maine island taking care of her baby cousin. The production follows her surprising discovery of a human bone, leading her to unravel the island’s deeply hidden secret — a murder — and come to the attention of her menacing neighbor.
“Anzacs” by Michele Livermore Wigton opens April 16. It’s based on “The Anzacs: 100 Years On” by Ted Egan. This new play tells the story of the beginnings of a formidable fighting force — the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps, formed in 1915. The play explores the extreme conditions of war in the 20th century and the effects of battle on the Anzacs and those who waited for them at home.
“Voices in the Mirror” will conclude the season. This annual production is an original sketch comedy and improvisational production by the teenagers of The Young Company.
Performances take place at 14 School St.
