AUGUSTA — Jean A. Roy of Lewiston has been appointed to the Maine Unemployment Insurance Commission.

The UIC is made up of three commissioners: one representing the employer’s perspective, one representing the employee’s perspective and the chairman representing the people of Maine. With the appointment, the commission now has a full slate of members.

Roy was confirmed as the employee representative. She taught foreign language for 33 years, first at Mt. Blue High School in Farmington and then at Lewiston High School. She holds a degree in French and Spanish from Bates College and a master’s degree in secondary education from the University of Maine.

During her career, Roy served as the chair for the New Teacher System, developing a mentor system for newly hired teachers in Lewiston. She also held positions in the Sandy River Education Association, the Lewiston Education Association, and the Maine Education Association’s board of directors, including roles in grievance hearings and government relations. She also served on the Commissioner’s Committee on Alternative Education, Truancy and Drop-out Prevention and on the Alternative Paths to Certification for Vocational Instructors.

Members of the Unemployment Insurance Commission are appointed by the governor to six-year terms. The UIC is the rule-making body for most of Maine’s unemployment system regulations. Employers or employees who disagree with the decision of the Bureau’s Division of Administrative hearings on any unemployment-related decision may appeal that decision to the UIC.
