WINTHROP — Winthrop’s offense did all it could to score and Mt. Abram’s defense did more than its fair share to frustrate the Ramblers in the second half.
Mt. Abram got one by Winthrop in the first half and held on the rest of the way with a 1-0 win over the stubborn Ramblers in a girls’ soccer game Thursday.
The Roadrunners’ senior co-captain and midfielder Risa Marble slipped her rolling goal past Winthrop senior goalie Shie Smith late in the first half. Summer Ross got the assist on the play.
The goal was impressive, but what was more amazing is how Mt. Abram’s defense withstood Winthrop’s second-half assault.
The Ramblers (3-5-1) were determined to get on the board, but the Roadrunners were indomitable on defense for 55 minutes.
“We did not think one goal would hold it,” Mt. Abram coach Andrew Delcourt said. “A very well-coached and talented team. A classy program. The girls showed a lot sportsmanship out on the field helping each other up. I love coming down here to play Winthrop. It was a tough fight.
“I thought they (Roadrunners) played a gutsy performance. We just had a long away game at Wiscasset on Tuesday, with not much turnaround, and came out here and showed a lot of intensity.”
One of the Ramblers’ finest shots was from freshman forward Jillian Schmelzer. She drilled one at Mt. Abram goalie Abigayle Brackley, who caught the ball with both arms.
“I think they knew what they needed to do to tie the game up or pull ahead,” Winthrop coach Jaynelle Smith said. “We worked on what the weakness was in the first half, the bounce going over the defense’s head, and they recognized that the second half, and it made a big difference.”
When the up-and-down action in the second half came to a close, the Roadrunners ran off with with their third victory of the season. They are now 3-4-2.
Statistically speaking, it was nearly even, with Winthrop earning four corners to Mt. Blue’s one, but the Roadrunners outshot the Ramblers, 8-7.
