Two local events are planned to celebrate Co-op Month, which is observed in October.

There will be a screening of the documentary film “Food for Change” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in the commons at the Center for An Ecology Based Economy (CEBE), 447 Main St. in Norway.

The documentary is about food co-ops, local economies and food security. It focuses on the role food co-ops play in communities and provides a historical backdrop to the current movement. More information about the film is available at www.foodforchange.coop.

On Oct. 22, Raise-Op Housing Cooperative, New Roots Cooperative Farm and the Somali Bantu Community Association of Lewiston-Auburn will host a free community gathering, Celebrating Cooperatives in Lewiston-Auburn, at 145 Pierce St. in Lewiston.

There will be a press conference at 3 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Raise-Op cooperative housing, and the announcement of the “Cooperatives Build a Better Maine” report by the Cooperative Development Institute. Food and networking will follow. There will be free community workshops at 4 p.m., discussing how to grow cooperatives in housing, food and employee ownership.
