GARDINER — Open Book Players will open its 20th season with “Spooks, Spectres and Spirits,” readers theater adaptations of stories ghostly and ghastly appropriate for Halloween.
The performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at Johnson Hall in Gardiner.
Included in the program are: “Of Tea and Time,” based upon the short story; “Mason’s Life,” by Kingsley Amis, where two strangers meet in a tea room and discover something very unusual and unbelievable about each other; “The Open Window,” by Saki, where a very nervous Mr. Framton Nuttel goes to the country to get some rest, but his encounter with Vera, the 15-year-old, highly imaginative niece is anything but restful.
Also, “The Circle,” by Lewis Shiner, where a group of friends and acquaintances share a love for reading and writing ghost stories, and find themselves in a frightening situation; “The Path Through the Cemetery,” by Leonard Q. Ross, where Ivan, an easily frightened soldier, accepts the challenge given by his lieutenant to walk through the cemetery at night; “The Monkey’s Paw,” by W.W. Jacobs, a classic story with a simple, yet terrible, message — be very careful what you wish for.
Rounding off the program will be “The Reach,” adapted for readers theater from the short story written by Stephen King. It’s about death and dying and one Maine island woman’s end-of-life experience.
Cast members include Janet Mecca, Andy Tolman, Arthur Bourget, Kelsey Parker, Kathleen Brainerd, Cheryl Clark, Rita Moran, Ginger Smith, Kathy Kauffman, Bob Giroux, Cindy Turcotte, Jay Barnett, Ben Wilson and Richard Bostwick.
It’s directed by Lucy Rioux, artistic director of Open Book Players.
