LEWISTON — Voting began Wednesday in the Twin Cities as absentee ballots arrived earlier than expected.
Lewiston City Clerk Kathy Montejo said her department received ballots on Tuesday and had mailed out 1,100 by Wednesday afternoon.
In Auburn, Deputy Clerk Alison Pepin said her department had mailed out 720 by Wednesday.
In Lisbon, ballots for the state and federal elections were ready for voters Wednesday, but ballots for the local races were not printed and were not expected for a week.
Voters can register to have an absentee ballot mailed to them by signing up online at the Maine Secretary of State’s office or by calling or visiting their municipal clerk’s office.
In Lewiston, the city clerk’s office is on the second floor of City Hall; the phone number is 513-3124. In Auburn, the city clerk’s office is on the main floor of Auburn Hall; the phone number is 333-6601, extension 1126.
Voters go to the polls Nov. 8 to elect a new president and representatives to Maine’s seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, and seats in Maine’s state Senate and House of Representatives and a variety of county elected positions.
The ballot also contains six referendum questions, including legalizing marijuana, creating a special education fund, background checks for non-dealer firearm sales, a minimum-wage increase, ranked-choice voting and a $100 million highway and transportation bond issue.
