LEWISTON — Arraignment for one of two boys facing felony charges for a Sept. 12 bucket loader spree will wait at least until Nov. 29.

Defense attorney Richard Charest filed a motion on behalf of 14-year-old Matthew Newton-Fortin in 8th District Court on Tuesday requesting a psychological evaluation of the boy, according to his father, Jonathan Fortin.

That evaluation will likely take between one and two months to complete. Newton-Fortin’s next hearing in the court is scheduled Nov. 29.

Newton-Fortin and another 14-year-old boy, Shawn Demarest of Litchfield, both face an identical list of eight counts, ranging from attempted elevated aggravated assault, aggravated criminal mischief, attempted aggravated assault, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and theft by unauthorized taking of the $10,000 bucket loader.

All would be felony charges in adult court.

Tuesday’s motion before Justice Susan Oram effectively put the state’s juvenile proceeding on hold until Newton-Fortin’s screening is complete.

Demarest is scheduled to be back in court Nov. 11.

According to the petition of charges, police believe the youths commandeered a bucket loader just after midnight Monday, Sept. 12, from West Gardiner. The bucket loader belonged to Wyman and Simpson Inc. general contractors in Richmond, according to the petition.

From West Gardiner, the pair allegedly drove the bucket loader through Sabattus, running over an $8,000 sign in front of Fielder’s Choice Homemade Ice Cream, as well as mailboxes, parked cars, street signs and fire hydrants throughout Sabattus.

They allegedly continued south through Lewiston, onto the Maine Turnpike and crossed the median into the northbound lanes, colliding with a police car and a private vehicle before Lewiston officers shot at the bucket loader’s tires near the New Gloucester barrier toll.
