AUBURN — Community Little Theatre will hold open auditions for “The Crucible” at 7 p.m. Sunday and Tuesday, Oct. 23 and 25, at the theater at 30 Academy St.
“The Crucible” was written by Arthur Miller, and is a dramatized and partially fictionalized story of the Salem witch trials that took place in the Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1692-93.
Miller wrote the play as an allegory of McCarthyism, when the U.S. government blacklisted accused communists. The play was first performed at the Martin Beck Theatre on Broadway on Jan. 22, 1953, and the production won the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play.
The action begins in the home of the Rev. Parris, whose daughter Betty lies unconscious and appears very ill. Around midnight the night before, Parris discovered his daughter and niece Abigail, and Tituba, his black slave, dancing in the woods with other girls from the town. Abigail threatens the girls with violence if they tell anyone what they had been doing in the woods.
Abigail tried to put a spell on Elizabeth “Goody” Proctor, wife of John Proctor, for dismissing her from her home as a servant. John Proctor was having an affair with Abigail, and refused to acknowledge it, and Abigail accuses Goody Proctor and others of being witches.
Those auditioning should come prepared to read for the role they’re interested in, as well as prepared to read for other roles the director may wish to hear. They should familiarize themselves with the show and the relationships between the characters.
Kay Warren will serve as director and Jason Pelletier will be assistant director. Nicole Chase is producer.
