LIVERMORE — This is the first year of the Student Learning Initiative Program at Spruce Mountain Primary School, but it was part of the Livermore school for eight years before the name change.
Area businesses are sent a letter detailing the challenges teachers face daily because of student apathy and lack of motivation. Funds donated to the initiative program are used to recognize both individual student and group progress and achievements.
Certificates, awards, special trips and pizza parties are some of the ways the program motivates students.
There are three levels of participation. Phoenix Sponsor businesses contribute $20-$99; Phoenix Super Sponsors donate $100-$499; members of the Green/Black Club give $500 or more.
Principal Kevin Harrington said, “Participation in the program has increased every year. Donations range from $20 to in excess of $500.
“We intentionally use the entire fund in an effort to recognize the great things students are accomplishing,” he said.
“Recognizing the accomplishments of students is far reaching and reinforces positive values. Our values include being kind, safe, responsible, and respectful. As values are reinforced, character blooms and our community grows,” he said.
