NEW SHARON — A local teenager accidentally shot himself in the foot Saturday while preparing to shoot a rifle behind his home, Trooper Reid Bond of the Maine State Police said Sunday.

Reid and Sgt. Peter Michaud responded at 10:29 a.m. to 236 Starks Road after a 16-year-old called 911.

They found that the teen was preparing to shoot a .223 caliber rifle in back of the home when he accidentally discharged it, striking his foot, Reid said. NorthStar EMS ambulance service and first responders from the New Sharon Fire Department responded to the scene.

The boy was taken to a local hospital where he was being treated for his injury, which was not life-threatening, police said. No one else was hurt or involved in the incident.
