LEWISTON — A couple accused of going on a spending spree with Mainers’ stolen credit card information were arrested in Niagara Falls, New York, last month after a Maine motel owner provided identifying information to police, according to the Maine State Police’s Facebook page.
Maine State Police posted on social media photos of three people suspected of using stolen credit card information from Oct. 18-23 in Maine and New Hampshire.
Police said the couple are expected to face charges in Maine where they are accused of using Maine residents’ credit cards at Wal-Marts in Scarborough, Biddeford, South Portland, Auburn, Farmington and Skowhegan. The list of locations is expected to grow.
State police are working with Seabrook (New Hampshire) police, Portsmouth New Hampshire Police, and the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations office in Bangor.
Maine State Police received a tip from a local motel owner in Hancock, who provided a possible name, phone number, and vehicle registration plate number of two suspects.
Maine State Police Sgt. Chris Rogers was able to track the pair to a Motel 6 in Niagara Falls, New York. Local police there found the couple’s vehicle and watched it throughout the night, according to the Facebook posting.
On Oct. 26, Rogers learned the couple was inside the Niagara Falls Wal-Mart, “likely committing the same crimes they had taken part in here in Maine,” the posting said. As the couple left the store, they were taken into custody by Niagara Falls Police.
The woman was identified as Lidia Ofelia Varguez-Casanova, 39, of Mexico, and the male was identified as Aris Dagoberto Reyes, 33, of Cuba. Their last known address was Las Vegas. The United States Border Patrol assisted at the scene. The pair was taken into Border Patrol custody and booked.
At the time of the arrest, the couple had numerous credit and debit cards along with money orders, and a large quantity of new, recently purchased merchandise, according to the Facebook posting.
Reyes was taken to the Batavia Federal Detention Center in Batavia, New York, where he is being held for 90 days. Varguez-Casanova was processed and released with documentation and instructions to contact United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.
