LEWISTON — Sosai Donna Harris, owner and teacher at Phoenix Academy of Martial Arts, is the world record-holder for most boards broken with one hand in a single minute.

With just 60 seconds to complete the task, Harris attempted to beat her own record Sunday at the Lewiston Armory’s “Breaking for Breast Cancer Awareness” fundraiser.

The number to beat: 156

The number achieved: 150

Even though she didn’t quite reach her goal or 157 or more, she still holds the record that she set last year on Oct. 10.

“I set up 216 because a woman from Australia broke 215 boards with two hands in one minute,” Harris said.

Harris and her husband, Harry, put on the event to raise awareness and money for breast cancer.

There were other events held before the big finale, including live music and a children’s demo team from Phoenix Karate.

“The reason we’re here is not just to break boards,” Harris said before her attempt. “We’re here to support breast cancer ninjas.”

Harris was raising money and fighting for Kathy Lebel, her cousin and co-owner of Schemengees.

Over $2,200 was raised and what didn’t go to Lebel went to the local nonprofit Short Folks For Hope, a cancer support community in Norway.

According to breastcancer.org more than 2.8 million women have a history of breast cancer in the U.S. This includes women currently being treated and women who have finished treatment.

About 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lives.

“The boards are broken, but these women will keep fighting,” Harris said.
