LEWISTON — After the polling site at Lewiston High School ran out of ballots Tuesday evening, Secretary of State Matt Dunlap gave clerks permission to print more.

Kristen Schulze Muszynski, the secretary’s spokeswoman, said that to her knowledge it was the only site in Maine to run out on Election Day.

“We can authorize them to print out more so it doesn’t bog down voting in any way,” she said. “Turnout is extremely high this year, so we’re very happy with that, but that is one of the side effects. They can just take care of printing them out and counting them.”

Since those extra ballots can’t be machine-counted, they’ll have to be counted by hand at the end of the night, Muszynski said.
