The DaPonte String Quartet will kick off its winter season with “Running a Ground,” a concert that ranges from Mozart to modern.

The concert features Mozart’s last string quartet, “No. 23” in F major, as well as contemporary American composer John Heiss’ “Microcosms,” and Russian great Sergei Prokofiev’s “String Quartet No. 2” in F major.

Performances are:

* Thursday, Nov. 17, 7:30 p.m., the Jewish Museum, 267 Congress St., Portland;

* Saturday, Nov. 19, 7:30 p.m., Johnson Hall, 280 Water St., Gardiner; and

* Sunday, Nov. 20, 3 p.m., Unitarian Universalist Church, 15 Pleasant St., Brunswick.

The DaPonte String Quartet is Maine’s premier string ensemble. It was founded in Philadelphia in 1991 and moved to Maine several years later on a National Endowment for the Arts rural residency grant. It performs over 60 times each year from Eastport to Kennebunkport.
