NORWAY — A public hearing on a 180-day moratorium on retail marijuana establishments and social clubs is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Town Office.
On Nov. 8, Maine voters narrowly approved a referendum legalizing recreational use of marijuana, allowing municipalities to regulate the location and operation of such enterprises.
On Wednesday, a spokeswoman for Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap said opponents filed a petition requesting a recount of the vote. The unofficial vote tally from the Secretary of State’s Office is 383,449 to 373,913, a difference of 9,536.
A date for the recount has not been set, according to the spokeswoman.
On Nov. 3, Police Chief Rob Federico suggested to selectmen that the town pass a moratorium to give officials time to write laws governing those businesses, should the statewide referendum pass.
The board voted 4-0 to schedule a public hearing on the issue.
