SABATTUS — The Board of Selectmen decided Tuesday to hold a workshop Nov. 29 to get more information on a 2-acre parcel the town owns in Greene near the Sabattus town line.

According a deed, the wooded lot was given to the town in 1984 by the late Louis W. Wallcroft. However, Darwin Webster of Freeport purchased it in 2003, not knowing it was owned by the town until he had it surveyed this year.

Town Manager Tony Ward figures the town has collected approximately $10,000 in property taxes from Webster.

The land has no structures on it and is primarily used for hunting, Webster said previously.

He has been working closely and amicably with the board on the matter, Ward said.

Attorney Martin Eisenstein has been researching the issue for the town.

In another matter, Regional School Unit 4 board member Nancy Provost spoke to the board about the recent interest in changing the cost-sharing formula for Litchfield, Sabattus and Wales. The formula is based 50 percent on student population and 50 percent property valuation.

Some Litchfield residents feel their portion is too high.

Recently there was discussion of changing to a 60/40 split, Ward said. The 60 percent enrollment and 40 percent valuation would increase Sabattus’ share by about $27,000 and Wales’ share by about $8,000. Litchfield’s share would decrease about $35,000, Ward said.

The school board will vote Wednesday, Nov. 30, whether to bring the issue to voters. The board meeting is at 6:30 p.m. in the health room at Oak Hill High School in Wales.

Fire Chief Marc Veilleux displayed the town’s new tanker truck at the Town Hall on Tuesday.

Also Tuesday, the board recognized member Andre Marquis’ last meeting.

Marquis did not seek re-election on Nov. 8, and voters elected Richard Lacombe to fill the position. They also elected Mark Duquette for another three years.

The next selectmen meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6.
