STRONG — Selectmen on Tuesday evening scheduled a special town meeting for Dec. 13 to approve payment of unanticipated expenses before the fiscal year ends.

Voters will be asked to approve payment for a larger-than-expected inspection fee for the closed landfill on Burbank Hill. The town closed the landfill many years ago but pays a state-mandated independent monitoring company to have the site checked for possible problems.

The closed landfill abuts the town’s public park, playground and is above Valley Brook, which flows into the Sandy River. State regulations require the town’s landfill to be monitored less frequently if no problems are detected over a number of years, but an independent monitoring company bills the town when it performs an inspection.

Board Chairman James Burrill said that in past years, inspections have been fewer, so paying this recent bill was not built into the 2016 budget.

Selectmen also are requesting funds to pay for dumpster and disposal costs that exceeded budget predictions.

In other business, selectmen failed to conclude a yearlong discussion and finalize plans to spend an approved $3,000 to upgrade workstation facilities at the Town Office.

Last year, selectmen prepared a request for the March town meeting warrant asking for money to buy new workstations and implement recommended ergonomic improvements. Voters approved the funding, but selectmen have not been able to agree on the final design plan.

With only two meetings remaining in the fiscal year, Burrill and Selectman Dick Worthley approved project plans, Selectmen Mike Pond and Rob Elliott opposed them, and Selectman Rodney Cook abstained.

If the work is not completed this year, selectmen hope to make a decision in 2017.

Also on Tuesday night, Road foreman Duayne Boyd will contact Central Maine Power to request that power poles at the top of True Hill be set farther from the side of the road. The new poles are near a gated dead end on private property, and Boyd said their placement will make plowing difficult this winter.
