TURNER — Selectmen asked Town Manager Kurt Schaub on Monday to draw up a Traffic Control Ordinance that would prohibit heavy tractor-trailers from using Main Street.
Two residents spotlighted the issue at the Nov. 7 board meeting, complaining of the noise created by the steady stream of tractor-trailers that travel the street night and day to avoid the traffic lights on Route 4.
The ordinance is meant to keep trucks over a certain weight off Main Street, and will not affect midsize utility trucks or passenger vehicles.
Selectmen plan to put the ordinance to a vote at the Dec. 5 meeting.
Residents previously voiced concerns about the overall traffic on Main Street.
In other business:
* Selectmen voted to extend the deadline for removing dead trees on Richard Morin’s property from Nov. 15 to Dec. 9. Selectmen voted in October to pay $760, their share of the bill.
The Morins wanted the trees removed, and agreed to pay the bill, less the $760. That figure is what the town would have paid for removal of the dead branches close enough to the road to be a potential hazard if they broke off. According to Schaub, Morin has a signed contract to have the work completed by Dec. 5.
* The town will have the opportunity to request reducing or eliminating up to $5,600 in fines imposed by the Maine Department of Labor for issues at the Highway Department, Fire Department and Transfer Station. The issues have been fixed. The meeting is scheduled for Dec. 14 in Augusta.
* The board will continue its attempt to get bids for insulating the Rescue Barn ceiling.
* The holiday tree lighting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Town Office. Santa is scheduled to arrive with gifts for children and treats for everyone.
