LEWISTON — Investigators haven’t pinned down the cause of a Monday evening fire that destroyed a three-bay garage behind Poirier’s Market on Walnut Street.
The fire was reported shortly before 5 p.m. at 38 Walnut St. The name of the property owner at that address is Shakhawat Hossain, said Ryan Coleman, an inspector and investigator at Lewiston Fire Department.
The garage had been part of a larger, L-shaped building, Coleman said. Two previous fires dating back to 2012 had damaged other parts of the structure, and only the three-bay garage and a small shed remained.
Firefighters “did a great job” of keeping the fully involved blaze from spreading to nearby buildings, Coleman said. An apartment building behind the garage showed signs that some of its vinyl siding had melted, he said.
He estimated damage to the garage at roughly $10,000. There was little value to the contents of the garage that appeared be debris and old refrigeration equipment. No injuries were reported.
