DEAR SUN SPOTS: Did you lose a store card at any big-box store in Auburn on Black Friday or the following Saturday? If so, please call me to identify it and I will return it. Please call 207-689-5899. — No name, no town.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: My best friend is allergic to the metal in earrings and can only wear certain kinds of jewelry such as 14-karat gold. I would like to buy her some earrings for Christmas, but I also want to shop locally. Is there anywhere in Lewiston or Auburn that offers affordable, hypoallergenic jewelry? Thanks. — No name, Lewiston.

ANSWER: Metal allergies usually mean an allergy to nickel. Nickel is often used as part of a metal alloy. Other irritating alloys include those with brass or copper often plated with silver or gold. To find jewelry that is going to be kind to your friend’s skin, look for sterling silver or 14 or higher karat gold.

To shop locally for the holidays, check out some of the upcoming craft fairs for some handmade and truly unique jewelry. There is also Creative Artisans of Maine, a market at Provencher’s, 299 River Road in Lewiston. It features several local jewelry makers and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

If any readers have suggestions for local artists or retailers offering hypoallergenic jewelry, please write to Sun Spots.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Children’s Advocacy Center of Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford Counties project came together through a community labor of love. Completion of the CAC of Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford Counties would not have been possible without some serious community donations, some major heavy-lifting from community champions and volunteers and a steadfast vision to create a sacred, trauma-informed, child friendly, forensically sound space for the youngest victims of violence in our communities.
