AUBURN — A South Portland man accused of attacking a Sabattus man with a machete after a road rage incident was sentenced Thursday to serve more than two months in jail.
Carlos Genoves, 52, pleaded guilty with the help of a Spanish interpreter in Androscoggin County Superior Court to a new charge of criminal threatening, a misdemeanor. A prosecutor dismissed two felonies: aggravated assault and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.
A judge sentenced Genoves to 75 days in Androscoggin County Jail.
Alexander Russell, 29, told police he had been driving in Lewiston on Sabattus Road on Aug. 6 when he had a confrontation with Genoves, who Russell said had been driving erratically. Russell yelled at Genoves and gestured crudely at him, Russell told police.
Genoves followed Russell to his Main Street home in Sabattus, where both men got out of their cars and started to argue.
Genoves removed a “machete-type knife” from the trunk of his car and approached Russell, according to a written statement by Sabattus police officer Spencer Teixeira.
Russell said Genoves unsheathed the weapon, placed it against Russell’s throat and cut his hand before getting back into his car and fleeing the scene.
Teixeira wrote that he could see superficial wounds on Russell’s neck and hand.
A local firefighter told police he had witnessed the altercation, confirmed Russell’s account and gave police the license plate number on Genoves’ black 2007 Honda.
Russell identified Genoves from a photo lineup.
Police searched Genoves’ home and car after securing a search warrant, but didn’t recover a weapon, Teixeira wrote in his report.
