NORWAY — The Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine is kicking off a support group for men who have been recently diagnosed with cancer, survivors and those who are receiving treatment for the disease.

Sherri Otterson, center supervisor, said the organization had been looking for a man to lead the men’s support group for a while, but no one had come forward.

She said Vance Jordan, a pastor at South Bridgton Congregational Church, approached the center and volunteered to serve as the facilitator.

Jordan said that he was reading the Bridgton News and saw an advertisement seeking a caregiver for a men’s cancer support group.

“As soon as I saw that, I introduced myself to the center and asked what I could do to help,” Jordan said.

While serving as a pastor, he also spent about 16 years working in hospice and assisting people at the end of their lives.

“It felt like a natural progression,” he said. “It felt like they kind of went together. In both cases, I was helping people.”

Otterson said Jordan was anxious to get going and was interested in leading the group once a week, but she decided to have the group meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month until “we figure out what people want.”

Jordan said the first few meetings will be about figuring out what the needs of the group are, and then going from there.

The support group will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine, 100 Main St. Meetings will take place on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. This month, the meetings will be held on Dec. 13 and 27.
