DEAR SUN SPOTS: Home is where we feel safe, secure and loved. For close to 40 years people with disabilities living in the greater Lewiston-Auburn area have been calling John F. Murphy Homes home. We are looking for kindhearted people to come volunteer and brighten our folks’ day. Your good heart, our good works, we all can make a difference!

To apply, visit John F. Murphy Homes at 800 Center St. in Auburn or visit our website at Jfmhomes.org.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I understand that there is a class-action lawsuit against Electricity Maine. Could you give me the names of the people so I could join the suit? — Dennis, no town.

ANSWER: According to a report by The Associated Press, a lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Portland on Nov. 18. Maine residents Kathleen Veilleux and Jennifer Chon are seeking damages to recover $35 million. Their attorney is Benjamin Donahue of the firm Hallett, Zerillo & Whipple, P.A.

This was posted on the law firm’s website on Nov. 22: “If we are successful in our lawsuit against Electricity Maine, all customers who enrolled in Electricity Maine’s services between 2011 and mid-2013 will receive some sort of refund. Although we are very interested in people’s stories and experiences with Electricity Maine, no direct participation in the lawsuit is required to receive compensation. If we prevail, you will receive either a written or electronic notice informing you of your legal rights. Feel free to email [email protected] or call 207-775-4255 with any questions.”

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice has scheduled the next session of training for volunteers who wish to visit hospice patients to begin on Tuesday, Jan. 10, and there’s still space available for those who wish to become volunteers. Volunteer opportunities are available across the agency’s service area which includes all of Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties, northern Cumberland County and parts of Kennebec, Sagadahoc and Somerset counties.

The hospice volunteer training program spans 20 hours, with six half-day sessions over three weeks. The training will enable volunteers to provide companionship to hospice patients who reside in their own homes, in nursing facilities or at our Hospice House in Auburn or the Togus Veterans Affairs hospital in Augusta. Along with those who plan to visit hospice patients, volunteers may also choose to assist in other ways, such as providing transportation to medical appointments or running errands for groceries or medication.

Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice is seeking volunteers who can commit to at least two hours per week for the next year to serve as hospice volunteers. Military veterans are also needed to support AHCH’s Veteran to Veteran program, which includes options for special recognition of military service when requested.

AHCH provides training, a background check and TB testing at no cost to volunteers. If interested in volunteering, please call 207-795-9580 or 1-800-482-7412, extension 1280, to schedule a brief phone conversation to discuss your interests. If it looks like this opportunity is a good fit, we will invite you to attend the upcoming training.
