MEXICO — Selectmen are looking to replace the old analog phone system in the Town Office and library.

At Tuesday’s board meeting, Town Manager Jack Gaudet announced details of a proposal for a digital phone system to replace the eight phones being used. He said the Police Department has been using a new digital phone system for a month and it’s working well.

Outgoing Town Manager John Madigan said they considered going digital a couple of years ago after two of the old Merlin phones broke, but after finding a couple of the same phones on Amazon, town officials decided not to get into the added expense.

Board Chairman Richie Philbrick asked Gaudet to gather more information, such as buying versus a lease/purchase, for the Jan. 17 board meeting.

Selectmen also discussed having a special election to fill the selectman seat vacated by Gaudet. Options include filling the position or continuing with four members and holding an election in June when Gaudet’s term expires.

Philbrick said a couple of people have expressed interest in the position, which he said he’d like to have filled by the time the budget process gets underway in March.

Town Clerk Penny Duguay said filling the position would require a special ballot election.

The board decided to table action until the next meeting Jan. 3.

Also tabled until Jan. 3 was action on a moratorium ordinance on retail marijuana establishments and social clubs.

The ordinance, initiated by Police Chief Roy Hodsdon, would be for a 180-day period.

Selectmen said they wanted to wait until board member Reggie Arsenault is present before taking action. Arsenault also serves on the Planning Board, which is working on language for a moratorium as well as an ordinance.

This was the final meeting for Madigan, who has served as town manager for 12 years. He has retired and will now serve in the Maine Legislature representing House District 115.

On behalf of the board, Philbrick thanked Madigan for his service to the town.

Madigan responded, “I want to thank the people and the staff. It’s been a nice journey.”
