SABATTUS — Police were advising the public to lock their doors and to be alert after a 10-hour search ended Wednesday night with a man described as armed and dangerous still at large.
Police spent most of the day on a dead-end road near Sutherland Pond for what initially appeared to be a standoff that began around 10 a.m.
Police surrounded the home for hours, but the search was declared over shortly before 8 p.m. with the whereabouts of the suspect unknown.
Sabattus police said Scott Albert, 34, was wanted on a charge of assaulting his girlfriend late Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning before she was able to leave the Kristy Lane home.
Sabattus police were joined by Maine State Police and officers from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office at the home after the alleged assault was reported.
“Sabattus police also received information that Albert was armed with a handgun and had access to many other firearms,” Police Chief Gary Baillargeon wrote in a news release.
Albert was last seen at the home Wednesday morning, police said. Baillargeon said the officers tried several times to call Albert before seeking help from the Maine State Police Tactical Team.
Sabattus fire and rescue crews were also summoned to the area and staged at Sutherland Pond and East Ridge roads.
“After all other options were exhausted, the Maine State Police breached the home and conducted a complete and thorough search of the residence,” Baillargeon said. “The suspect, Scott Albert, was not located inside.”
It was believed Albert left the home on foot.
Ten hours after the search began, police said Albert was still at large. Police said they have a warrant charging Albert with domestic assault, domestic reckless conduct and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Kristy Lane runs off East Ridge Road, which is off Sutherland Pond Road.
According to police, Albert is to be considered armed and dangerous and the Sabattus Police Department, as well as all area police agencies, were searching for him.
Albert is said to be roughly 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing 155 pounds. He has brown eyes and brown hair.
Baillargeon said people can help by locking all of their doors and reporting any suspicious activity to the Sabattus Police Department at 207-375-6952. If anyone knows Scott Albert’s whereabouts, police warn not to approach him but to report it to Sabattus police.
