Shirkers will not find the Lewiston fire department an agreeable organization to ally with from here on. There has been no general claim that such persons have heretofore belonged to the department, so the action of the Lewiston fire commissioners in session Friday night may only be in the line of a precautionary measure. At any rate, a rule was there formulated that the captains of the different companies of the department shall report the names of shirkers in their companies to the chief. The chief and his assistant engineers have certain powers for the maintenance of discipline and efficiency, but the rule also says that charges may be preferred and brought to the attention of the Commission.

An Auburn Highway Department snowblower was put out of commission early Saturday morning when the motor of the blower section exploded and ruptured the gasoline feed line. The blower burst into flames. Auburn firemen were called to Court Street just westerly of Goff Street at 12:05 a.m. to extinguish the fire. The operator of the blower said there was a “bang” and the entire blower section mounted on front of a heavy duty tractor, burst into flames. An examination of the motor, after the fire had been extinguished, showed that a piston had broken through the motor.

Thanks to the cooperation of several landowners and the work of few enthusiastic volunteers working under the auspices of the Peru Recreation Committee, Peru now has its own cross country ski trail. The trail runs roughly parallel with Spear Stream from the Ridge Road to Wiven Lufkin’s lower field in Dickvale. Plans call for the trail to extend at least as far as Mineral Spring, a distance estimated to be between five and six
kilometers. The trail, the idea of Recreation Committee Chairman Denny Smith and ski enthusiast Don Fuller is smooth sailing for all but a short section in the middle which has yet to be brushed out.
