RANGELEY — Freshman Nolan Boone hit a jumper with 0.7 seconds remaining to lift Rangeley to a 55-53 boys’ basketball victory over Vinahaven on Saturday.
The Lakers (3-5) trailed by 12 points with less than four minutes to play, but rallied back with a press defense and 3-point shooting.
They got the ball back soon after tying the game, and with seven seconds remaining, Carl Trafton broke the Vikings’ press and dribbled down the court and shot the ball. It missed, but Ian Lillis tracked down the rebound and kicked the ball out to Boone for the game-winning midrange jumpshot.
Boone finished with 10 points. Trafton and Kyle LaRochelle led Rangeley with 16 points apiece.
Keon Arey had 19 points for Vinalhaven (5-4), and Cody Hamilton put up 16 and Elijah Bineau-Ames scored 12.
From Saturday’s win, Rangeley earned revenge for Friday night’s 65-51 loss to the Vikings.
Telstar 64, Dirigo 58, OT
DIXFIELD — Senior forward Tanner Wheeler poured in 21 points as Telstar notched a 64-58 overtime victory over Dirigo in boys’ basketball Saturday afternoon.
Junior forward Jarrett Bean notched a double-double with 11 points and 19 rebounds for the Rebels (2-6). He made two foul shots with 25 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.
Junior forward Cooper Chaisson scored a team-high 19 points, while junior point guard Luke Lueders contributed 17 points for the Cougars (1-7) in the losing effort.
Madison 71, Mountain Valley 54
RUMFORD — Mitch Jarvis compiled an impressive 28 points to power Madison to a 71-54 victory over Mountain Valley in boy’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (9-0) jumped out to a 21-10 first-quarter lead and held strong the rest of the way. Nick Morales contributed 19 points for Madison.
Will Bean paced the Falcons (4-5) with 14 points, while Jacob Blanchard added 13 in the losing effort.
Oxford Hills 58 Bonny Eagle 45
STANDISH — The Vikings had a quick start as they defeated Bonny Eagle in boys’s basketball action.
Matt Fleming had a double-double to lead the Vikings (6-3). He finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Chris St. Pierre had 12 points, while Cole Verrier chipped in with 10.
Zach Maturo had 12 points for Bonny Eagle (3-5), and Nick Thorne had 11 points.
Girls’ basketball
Rangeley 44, Vinalhaven 39
RANGELEY — Rangeley bounced back from a 22-point loss to Vinalhaven on Friday with a 44-39 win over the Vikings on Saturday in girls’ basketball action.
Sydney Royce and Natasha Haley each put up 14 points for the Lakers, who improve to 6-2 on the season. Royce also had six rebounds, as did Celia Philbrick. Haley had seven steals, and Brooke Egan dished out four assists.
Deja Doughty scored 15 points for Vinalhaven (6-2), to lead all scorers.
Edward Little 67, Noble 24
AUBURN — If Edward Little didn’t score a point after the first quarter, it still would have won its girls’ basketball game against Noble on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Eddies did keep scoring, though, and their 29 points in the opening quarter were just the beginning of a 67-24 victory.
EL’s (6-2) lead grew to 49-9 at halftime. The large margin allowed several Red Eddies to play significant minutes, and 10 of the 12 who played scored. Three reached double figures: Grace Fontaine had 17, Jade Perry finished with 14 and Jordyn Reynolds contributed 12.
Stephanie Couture led Noble (0-6) with nine points.
Hebron 56 Hyde 22
HEBRON — Three players scored in double figures for the Hebron girls’ basketball team in its 56-22 win over Hyde on Saturday.
Maddy New paced the Lumberjacks with 25 points. She also had seven rebounds, two assists and three steals, and she hit three 3-pointers. Franceska Halloran finished with 15 points and seven assists, and Reily New had 10 points.
Eliza Quinones grabbed 10 rebounds to for Hebron (2-3).
Lisbon 42, Carrabec 30
NORTH ANSON — Lisbon put Carrabec away in the second quarter, and the Greyhounds cruised thereafter to a 42-30 girls’ basketball win Saturday.
After the first quarter ended in an 8-8 tie, Lisbon outscored the Cobras 15-4 in the second to take a 23-12 lead into halftime.
The Greyhounds (5-3) were led by Kipri Steele’s 14 points. Kaylin Le added 11.
Carrebec’s (2-6) top scorers were Bailey Dunphy and Mackenzie Baker, both with eight points.
Mountain Valley 51, Hall-Dale 16
RUMFORD — Ashley Russell paced Mountain Valley with 13 points in a 51-16 win over Hall-Dale.
Emily Laubauskas had 11 points for the Falcons (5-2) while also grabbing nine rebounds and making four steals.
Sabrina Freeman had seven points to lead the Bulldogs.
Buckfield 43, Seacoast Christian 27
ELIOT — Senior guard Kali Litchfield tossed in a game-high 12 points as Buckfield collected a 43-27 triumph over Seacoast Christian in girls’ basketball action Saturday afternoon.
The Bucks (2-5) got a good start in the first quarter. They pulled away with a 12-4 run in the third frame. Sophomore guard Hannah Shields contributed 11 points on three field goals and five free throws for Buckfield.
Sophomore forward Abby Wirling scored a team-high nine points on four field goals, including a 3-pointer, for the Guardians (2-5) in the losing effort.
Boys’ hockey
Lewiston 2, Cony/Hall-Dale/Monmouth 0
LEWISTON — Lewiston remains unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over Cony/Hall-Dale/Monmouth in boys’ hockey action Saturday.
The Blue Devils improve to 6-0, while the Rams drop to 4-2.
Cody Doyon assisted on both goals as Jeromey Rancourt and Dustin Larochelle lit the lamp.
Conrad Albert earned the shutout for Lewiston.
Junior hockey
L/A 4, Maine 1
LEWISTON — Former St. Dom’s standout Caleb Labrie had a hat trick to pace the Fighting Spirit to a 4-1 victory over in-state rival the Maine Wild.
Jonathan Donaghey picked up his ninth tally of the year in the victory.
Dylan Vrees, Phil Pistraya, JP Chauvin and Walker Hamiltonm each had an assist for L/A.
Derek Erbe scored for the Wild.
Aaron Callan made 15 saves for the Fighting Spirit in the victory. Former Biddeford standout Brendon Daigle stopped stopped 27 shots for the Wild.
Men’s basketball
Bates 64, Bowdoin 59
BRUNSWICK — First-year player Tom Coyne poured in a career-high 23 points to lead Bates College to a 64-59 victory over Bowdoin in men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.
Coyne, of Falmouth, went on a 9-0 run in the second half to assist the Bobcats (11-3) in their first win over the Polar Bears (7-6) since 2011. Coyne also went 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Nick Gilpin dished out a team-high four assists while pulling down seven rebounds to go along with five points for Bates.
Jack Simonds led Bowdoin with 17 points, and Hugh O’Neil tallied a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort.
Women’s basketball
Bowdoin 70, Bates 58
LEWISTON — Bates College led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but Bowdoin College doubled up the Bobcats in the fourth quarter to defeat the Bobcats 70-58 in NESCAC women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.
Junior Nina Davenport, of Freeport, led all scorers with 18 points. Senior co-captain Allie Coppola tallied a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Melanie Binkhorst came off the bench for the Bobcats (4-9) to contribute seven points.
Eleven different players scored in a balanced attack for the Polar Bears (11-2) in the game. Lydia Caputi led Bowdoin with 13 points, while Kate Kerrigan notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
