LEWISTON — An Immigration Unity Rally on Saturday at the Franco Center is one of many to be held across the country in the coming days to educate immigrants and refugees of their rights and to raise awareness of immigration policies.
The event, organized locally by the Maine People’s Alliance, is part of the Fair Immigration Reform Movement’s observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
In Lewiston, the rally will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Franco Center, 46 Cedar St. Speakers will include City Councilor Jim Lysen and a representative of the Civil Liberties Union of Maine. Students from Bates College will perform.
Child care and children’s activities will be available. There is no cost to attend.
The rallies will launch a national week of action aimed at bringing together immigrant families, organizations, allies and supporters to show the national significance of President Barack Obama’s executive order to expand the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and to implement the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents.
The groups have urged the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the case to support immigrant families.
