LIVERMORE — The Washburn-Norlands Living History Center has several volunteer opportunities available, and is hosting a special volunteer orientation from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 290 Norlands Road.

Volunteers are integral in keeping the Norlands operating smoothly and bringing history to life for people of all ages.

Potential volunteers may have an interest in history; love organizing files or scrapbooking; like working with the public; or may have visited Norlands and encountered one of the historical characters and wondered how the staff brings these characters to life in a fun, informative and engaging way.

While program interpreters are an essential part of Norlands educational programs and work with the public, there are also behind-the-scenes opportunities.

Opportunities include mansion tour guides and greeters, educational programs for students, gift shop and event admissions, publicity, office work, meal servers, light carpentry and repair work, and event setup and cleanup. Opportunities range from ongoing commitments to seasonal and occasional assignments, and are tailored to match the skills and interest of the volunteer.

“Our team of volunteers provide extraordinary service to Norlands,” said Sheri Leahan, Norlands executive director. “They are what makes this place so special. We wouldn’t be here without them.”

At the orientation, attendees will meet current volunteers, hear more about the opportunities and become better acquainted with the nonprofit. Coffee and light refreshments will be served. A tour of the 1867 Washburn mansion is included.

Reservations are required by Thursday, Jan. 26.

In the case of inclement weather, orientation will be held on Thursday, Feb. 2.
