DEAR SUN SPOTS: On Friday, Jan. 27, the Woman’s Literary Union will host its first Tiara Tea from 1 to 3 p.m. and again from 5 to 7 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to begin collecting prom gowns and accessories for our April 1 Fairy Godmother Prom Gown Giveaway. We invite readers to enjoy tea at the historic Foss Mansion, 19 Elm St. in Auburn, to dress up (boas and tiaras) and drop off their donations. Stay and share the stories that go along with your item. We will accept new or clean gently worn gowns, short prom, graduation or banquet dresses along with jewelry, hair decorations, purses and shoes for girls in middle and high school. Miss Maine Teen USA Victoria Timm of Scarborough will join us during the 5 to 7 p.m. session. There is no charge for anyone bringing a donation for the Fairy Godmother project. Thank you, Sun Spots, for all that you do to keep our community informed and connected.— Carol Mashaw, WLU Special Events chairwoman.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for all the help you give your readers. I am interested in starting a group for chronic pain sufferers who have had their lives disrupted by the new narcotic limitations that took place Jan. 1. We need to make our voices heard in Augusta. Please contact me at 207-240-2838. — BT, Lewiston.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have many puzzles to give away, mostly 1,000 pieces. Do you know of anyone who would like them? Free to a good home, call 207-786-0544. — Leslie Garey, Auburn.
ANSWER: There have been requests in the past from nursing homes and assisted living facilities for jigsaw puzzles. This includes a request from the tenants at Merrill Estates in Mechanic Falls back in November. They can be reached by calling 207-345-7019 to see if they are still in need.
If you or your organization could use these puzzles, please contact Leslie.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Let’s all tackle child abuse together! We here at the Children’s Advocacy Center of Androscoggin, Franklin & Oxford County are very excited that the New England Patriots are going to the Super Bowl. They have been supporters of the mission of our agency via donations in the past. Now you can help us get a touchdown toward ending child abuse by hosting a fundraiser party during the big game. Collect from your guests: $1 for a field goal; $1 for a sack of Atlanta’s quarterback; $1 for a fumble; $3 for a touchdown; $5 after New England wins. These rules are optional; there are no officials standing by to throw a flag.
There is no one way to host this event. You can come up with your own ideas, such as each person who attends your party donates $5 to the center or have attendees pay a $10 fee to be in an appetizer cook-off — winner has bragging rights for the coming year — and other creative ideas. Every dollar will help us meet our end goal of promoting healing and safety for the children in our communities. Donations can be mailed or brought to CAC – AFO, 56 Lafayette St., Lewiston, ME 04240. For questions or more information, call 207-784-0436. — Kat Perry, CAC coordinator.
