DEAR SUN SPOTS: I got super glue on my Formica kitchen counter. How can I get that off without doing damage to my counter? — No name, Lewiston.

ANSWER: Formica is a durable, non-porous, laminate surface but it can get scratched and discolored if you are not careful. Instead of jumping right to using a harsh solvent, first try gently scraping the glue off with a putty knife or similar tool. If this does not work, Formica suggests using denatured alcohol. If you do not have denatured alcohol handy, you can very carefully try wetting a rag with nail polish remover and blotting the spot. Formica does warn that some strong acid or alkaline cleaners and cleansers can mar or permanently discolor your countertop. Always test your cleaner on a small, discreet area first. If denatured alcohol or an acetone remover does not take care of the glue, there are adhesive solvents available. Always follow the directions on the label, make sure to test out a spot first and never leave a harsh chemical sitting on the surface.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: For the past several months, Shaw’s supermarket has had a deal where you save stamps and get free Farberware cookware. They also extended the deadline for redeeming to Jan. 27, yet there are no pots or pans. What gives? Many thanks. — C.L., Lewiston.

ANSWER: Since September, Shaw’s has been handing out stamps, one for every $10 you spend, until you have enough to redeem for free Farberware Millennium Stainless Steel cookware. You may have noticed the in-store display at checkout. Each piece has its own redemption value which is listed on the back of your Stamp Saver card so you can see what you can get with your stamps. It’s a very popular promotion, so popular that they are still out of the cookware.

Though the promotion has ended, the deadline for redeeming your stamps has been extended until the stores receive more cookware, hopefully by the end of next week. Check in then or contact customer service. The Lewiston store can be reached by calling 207-784-6900, the Auburn store can be reached by calling 207-784-6971.
