DEAR SUN SPOTS: Do any stores in Lewiston or Auburn carry African black soap by Nubian Heritage? I first purchased the product at Hannaford in Lewiston, but they have failed to restock the item. Thank you. — Janet, Auburn.

ANSWER: This once-obscure product has become very popular in the past few years because of its reported skin-care benefits. According to the Nubian Heritage website: “African black soap, made with palm ash, tamarind extract and plantain peel has been used in Africa for centuries to minimize the appearance of skin blemishes and other skin ailments.”

Nubian Heritage African black soap is available at Axis Natural Foods, at 120 Center St. in Auburn. Nubian Heritage brand and the brand SheaMoisture are both owned by Sundial brands. SheaMoisture African black soap is carried by most pharmacies and grocery stores. Just ask an associate for assistance; it may be in the soap aisle, the facial care aisle or the acne care aisle, depending on where you shop.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Girl Scouts of Maine is looking for volunteers in all areas of Maine. There are so many benefits to volunteering with Girl Scouts. As a Girl Scout troop leader, you’ll introduce girls to new experiences that make every day feel like the best day ever. You’ll be their cheerleader, guide and mentor, helping them develop skills and confidence that will last long after the meeting is over. Imagine the smiles, the excitement, the memories you’ll make — those are the moments you’ll share at Girl Scouts.

Not only will you have a co-leader to work with, you will have an incredible network of skilled and talented volunteers who will guide you on your Girl Scout journey, from local service unit team members to staff members who have been trained to help you get the most out of Girl Scouting. Working with your co-leader, you will be able to plan your Girl Scout time around your schedules and determine when, where and how often your troop will meet. We’re going to give you what you need to ensure that your experience is positive right from the very start including access to training, mentor support and resources.

Be a role model for girls and help them discover their own potential! Work together with other trained adult volunteers to plan troop meetings and activities that bring the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to life while girls discover and try new things, connect with their peers and take action in their community. DEAR SUN SPOTS: On Saturday, Feb. 11, a benefit dinner will be held at the Paris Fire Hall, 137 Western Ave. in Paris, from 4 to 7 p.m. for a local family that lost everything in a fire that claimed their home and possessions. They are a family of three with a baby girl on the way and they are in need of our help. The fire was caused by electrical issues and they have lost everything but the clothes they were wearing. Please come together in support of this family and help them get back on their feet. The dinner will consist of spaghetti, chili, salad, rolls and dessert. Donations are welcome and appreciated. — Paris Fire Department.
