Thirteen carloads of Lewiston’s municipal coal have gone astray. This lot was expected to arrive in the city some time ago. After several days had passed from the time it was scheduled to reach here, Mayor Brann sent his secretary, D. S. Dexter, to Portland to confer with President McDonald of the Maine Central R.R., and the superintendent of transportation of the Boston & Maine R.R. relative to the matter. They agreed to do all in their power to trace the coal but suggested that Mr. Dexter go to Boston to discuss the situation with the superintendent of transportation there. Accordingly, Mr. Dexter left Lewiston for Boston, Friday morning.

(Editorial) Our compliments to the Auburn Parks and Recreation Department for its forward-looking move in laying out a trail for snowmobiles that runs from the Pettingill Park area to the shore of Lake Auburn and around Taylor Pond and back to the starting point. This is the kind of action public recreation departments should be undertaking, and Norris Ingersoll and maintenance crew of the APRD are to be commended for concerning themselves with a matter that has become a problem. Snowmobiling has become so popular that in some areas the vehicles have become a downright nuisance. Farmers particularly have been annoyed by the sleds, claiming that in many instances considerable damage has been done to cropland and in some instances to other property. This has resulted in much posting of property against trespassing.

Lewiston sold $5.8 million in bonds Tuesday at a “very favorable” rate of 5.52 percent, said Finance Director Richard Metivier. The city, in hopes of breaking 6 percent, had projected savings of $150,000 from an advance refunding of a 1984 bond issue, Metivier said. Tuesday’s deal generated /////////// $1132,000 ////////////// in savings, $149,000 of which can be used in next year’s budget, he said.
