BRIDGTON — After a week of back-to-back snowstorms and winter blues, the sun came out to smile upon Highland Lake in Bridgton, and create an energetic, pleasant atmosphere for the Winter Carnival on Saturday.

For the 15th year, Harvest Hills Animal Shelter in Fryeburg raised money for homeless animals through its Freezin’ for a Reason polar plunge at Highland Lake.

This year, thanks to registrations for the plunge, local businesses and independent and group fundraising efforts, the shelter had raised $28,000 by the time of the plunge.

The staff of True North Veterinary Hospital in Bartlett, New Hampshire, was given the Spirit Award for its enthusiasm for the plunge, and their outfits. Last year, participants dressed up as unicorns. This year, they were crazy cat ladies.

“If we’re going to jump in freezing cold water, we’ve got to make it fun — and it’s for a great cause,” said staff member Stephanie Macomber.

For those taking the plunge, a warm hot tub soak awaited them afterwards, and many were grateful for the warmer temperatures — much warmer than in years past.

The Bridgton Fire Department was at the carnival, serving fried dough boys from a firetruck, and Mac’s Grill sold a plethora of delicacies, including lobster rolls, from their truck.

Attendees could also enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides, sled-dog rides, and a magic show by Ray Logan.

For those over 21 looking for a good time, an enclosed tent equipped with a full bar was available, and those who had their IDs could enjoy a drink and country music while overlooking the glistening lake.
