FARMINGTON — Saturday’s Fire and Ice Festival is gaining momentum as more businesses offer a variety of free activities.

The festival from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 11, is moving beyond Front Street, John Moore of Narrow Gauge Cinema said.

Weather has put a damper on the event over the past couple of years, but it is coming back better, he said.

“It is nice to have some new people involved,” he said. “They are helping to broaden the size of the festival.”

In recognition of what a tough winter it has been for everyone, organizers are offering all events free to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, he said.

Along with the traditional free movies, tube park and fireworks over Prescott Field, some new events include an ice-sculpture demonstration, a fat bike demo, cookie-decorating, music, a book title scavenger hunt and sledding.

Northern Lights will host the fat bike demo from 1 to 3 p.m. on Prescott Field, Todd Richard of Northern Lights said.

“It is a chance to get riders out to try the bike,” he said. “The best way to answer their questions about a fat bike is to let them ride it.”

At Uno Mas Grill on Front Street, Subzero Ice Carving from Lisbon will give a live ice-carving demonstration at 1 p.m.

Front Street Mercantile, which is preparing to move to 133 Broadway, is hosting cookie-decorating from 1 to 4 p.m. at the new store location on Broadway, owner Christine Geisser said.

County Seat Realty and The Roost Pub and Wingery will sponsor music by Down the Dirt Road band from 1 to 3 p.m. behind the roost.

A Fire and Ice book title scavenger hunt begins at 1 p.m. sharp at Devaney, Doak and Garrett Booksellers on Broadway.

Other activities include:

• Narrow Gauge Cinema, free showings of “Sing” and “A Dog’s Purpose” at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m.

• Franklin Savings Bank Tube Park, 1 to 5 p.m, behind Dunkin’ Donuts, is co-sponsored this year by Collins Enterprises, E.L. Vining & Son and the bank.

• Make a snowman at Divine Inspirations, Front Street, from 1 to 5 p.m.

• Horse-drawn wagon rides on Front Street and sleigh rides sponsored by Kyes Insurance on Prescott Field from 1 to 5 p.m.

• Sledding, 1 to 5 p.m. left of Narrow Gauge Cinemas, sponsored by Big Sky Drive-In & Grill.

• Some downtown stores are offering special sales.

• Fireworks over Prescott Field, 6 p.m., will top off the event.
