I am writing in opposition to LD 44, a bill to lower the age requirement to 18 to carry a concealed gun.

Of all the issues that I discuss with my colleagues, neighbors and friends, not one of them involves an outcry over the inability of 18-to-20 year olds to carry a concealed gun without a permit. Where oh where, I wonder, does the support or perceived need for this bill, come from? Is there a group of 18-to-20 year olds who came forward and pleaded with Sen. Eric Brakey to file this bill? I followed the election in my town and cannot recall a discussion over the need for our high school seniors to carry a concealed weapon.

As many have noted, there is a much greater likelihood that a gun will be used against a person than it will be used in self-defense. I would suggest that this is even more true among 18-to-20-year-olds who would be allowed to carry a concealed gun without any background checks or training.

Contrary to what Sen. Brakey has said, using a handgun is not the same as using a chain saw.

I would much prefer that legislators focus on the many issues facing this state and country and not waste taxpayers money filing bills such as LD 44.
