Paige, a Safe Voices client, is thanked by friends and supporters at a news conference Wednesday after speaking about her recent experience finding help at the domestic violence organization. “I was given courage,” she told the more than two dozen Safe Voices employees, volunteers, board members and others who gathered at Auburn City Hall to mark the organization’s 40th anniversary. “I was given a voice. I knew I was safe — and for once, I felt cared for.” Safe Voices, which started as the Abused Women’s Advocacy Project, serves Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties. It maintains a 24-hour help line, runs a shelter, offers support groups and children’s services, provides help for victims in court and provides education and advocacy in the community.
