Jim Handy of Lewiston looks closely at a gravestone at Riverside Cemetery in Lewiston Saturday morning as he checks to see if the person buried there was a veteran. Volunteers placed flags in front of the gravestones of veterans Saturday morning in cemeteries throughout the state in preparation for the upcoming Memorial Day Celebration on May 29. There is some debate over where the flag should be placed. While most agree that if you are looking at the front of the gravestone, the flag should be placed just in front of the gravestone’s front-left corner, others say that if there are no other flags present, it may be placed anywhere in the front.
