SABATTUS — All’s well that ends well: A pair of grave markers reported stolen from Pleasant Hill Cemetery earlier this week turned up safe and sound Friday.

A cemetery official said the markers had been removed by a local undertaker for cleaning. The family of the deceased was unaware of the cleaning, and when they visited the cemetery over the weekend, they reported that the markers were gone, presumably having been stolen.

Cemetery board President Ron LaBerge told reporters Friday the markers should be back in place soon, cleaner and well cared for.

Reaction to the news that they’d been stolen was fierce on Friday, with dozens of people posting their thoughts on social media. At least one veterans group was making plans to help raise funds for replacement markers before the good news spread that there had been no theft.

Sabattus police investigated the matter.

Ron LaBerge, president of the Pleasant Hill Cemetery board in Sabattus, on Thursday straightens a flag over a grave from which a veteran’s marker was taken for cleaning.
