ALDIE, Va. — Captain Richard Hildreth Field USNR (Ret.), former assistant commissioner for design and construction at the General Services Administration and member of the Naval Civil Engineer Corps, died Monday, July 3.

The son of Roland and Leah Field, Richard was born in 1934 in Lewiston and received a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of New Hampshire and a Master of Science from the George Washington University. He met Diane MacLean of Newton, Mass., in college, where he was the vice president of Acacia Fraternity, and they married in 1957 and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. After completing officer candidate school in Newport, Rhode Island, Richard received his naval commission in 1957 and supported the design and construction of military bases in Spain, where he and his wife lived for many years. Their daughter, Lesley Anne, was born upon their return to California.

He joined the federal civil service as an early advocate of intelligent building design at the Naval Facilities Command, and later became the assistant commissioner for design and construction in the Public Buildings Service at the General Services Administration. Richard retired from the Government Accounting Office in 1989 after retiring from the U.S. Naval Reserves with 31 years of service in 1988. He then served at the Sverdrup Corporation as a senior project manager for new construction projects, including the World Bank headquarters building in Washington, D.C.

An avid skier, he was selected to represent the Eastern ski region in the 1956 Olympic ski jumping trials in Iron Mountain, Michigan, having won many jumping and downhill competitions throughout his years at Edward Little High School in Auburn, and during his college career. He and his family skied all over the world, and he enjoyed the sport until his 76th birthday. Richard and his family also enjoyed many summers on Branch Lake in Maine and at their home on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Richard was a loving and dedicated husband to his wife, Diane, of Falls Church, Virginia, and proud father of Lesley and grandfather of Mikalah, of Vienna, Virginia. He will be greatly missed by his brother, Robert Field of Chandler, Arizona; nephew, David Gilmour of Irvine, California; brother-in-law, James Gilmour of Mesa, Arizona; and many other family members and friends.

He is predeceased by his parents; and his sister, Phyllis Field Gilmour.
