WILTON — A young hunter got quite the birthday present on Saturday, when he shot a 115-pound doe, the first deer tagged at Steve’s Family Market in Wilton.

Colby Chase, 13, of Wilton, was hunting on his grandfather’s property in Wilton with his cousin Ashlynn Macomber and uncle Jonathan Macomber on Youth Deer Day when he shot the deer with a 7mm-08 rifle.

Every year on Youth Deer Day, those under 16 years old who have a valid junior hunting license are allowed to take one deer of either sex with a firearm, bow and arrow, or crossbow in zones that allow any-deer permits, according to Maine law. They also must be accompanied by an adult.

They are prohibited from taking another deer, unless they have been awarded a bonus antlerless-deer permit or participate in the expanded archery season, the law states.

Chase is a seventh-grader at Mt. Blue Middle School in Farmington, and enjoys hunting, fishing, and playing baseball.
