A young Lewiston boy who apparently doesn’t like being put to bed took direct action Sunday night to remedy the situation — he called the Auburn Police Department. The youngster’s babysitter had tucked him in bed about 6 p m. Sunday. Outraged by this treatment, the six-year-old crept to a phone and informed Auburn police that somebody around the house was giving him trouble. A request from the Auburn school system’s transportation director for permission to raise funds to buy video cameras for buses was tabled Wednesday after School Committee members split on the need for the surveillance equipment. Joan Hill, transportation director for the past three years, said the cameras are needed to curb student vandalism and misbehavior onboard the city’s 30 school buses. “We’re only two months into the school year and already we’ve spent $500 as a result of vandalism on the buses,” said Hill, who had proposed holding a bake sale to raise the funds needed to purchase the cameras. In Lewiston and Farmington, where the cameras have been installed on buses, Hill said school officials are reporting dramatic declines in the incidents of vandalism.
