GRAFTON TOWNSHIP — After battling a large woods fire for two days, crews will return Wednesday morning to continue extinguishing flames off North Road near Silver Stream and Success Pond, Newry Fire Chief Bruce Pierce said Tuesday evening.
The fire is mostly contained, but the 40-50 mph winds are concerning, he said.
The fire was reported Monday afternoon and by Tuesday evening it had spread over between 8 and 10 acres, Pierce said previously.
Crews returned Tuesday morning.
A helicopter did water drops and the Maine Forest Service and fire departments from Greenwood, Woodstock, Bethel, Newry and Errol, N.H., were among those involved in the battle.
The fire was believed to be on private land, northwest of Grafton Notch State Park and Old Speck Mountain in Oxford County near the New Hampshire border.
